Level:
fairly easy to moderate
(depending on the season)
Season: November through April is easy - May through
October is moderate and we will only take experienced kayakers
during this time.
Ko
Libong is still one of the
pearls in the Andaman Sea. This large island offers travelers
a taste of traditional island life. This multi-day sea kayaking
vacation destination offers a chance for responsible tourists
to experience both wonderful natural encounters as well as
an opportunity to interact with the locals.
Ko
Libong offers stunning limestone
karst cliffs and headlands. The island
is still covered in jungle. There are many trails of varying
degrees of difficulty for those who would like to either go
birding or simply go for a stroll in a tropical jungle.
The
islands could be circumnavigated in one day, but we prefer
to take our time and see it slowly. A channel cuts right through
the middle of the island, making the island even easier to
see.
Sea
kayaking in Trang
This multi-day sea kayaking expedition is an ever-shifting
panorama of beaches, headlands and tropical jungle. It is
not a resort destination, nor does the area attract hoards
of backpackers. It is an especially lovely area, removed from
easy transport for the mass market tour groups.
This
trip is for experienced paddlers during the low season (mid
April through October). It's perfectly calm during the
high season (November through mid April). It involves more
paddling than most of our other trips. It's a great
trip for experienced paddlers!
Dugongs
(Sea Cows) of the order Sirenia
There
are Dugong or sea cows on
the southern side of Ko Libong. These are similar to the Manatees
of tropical America. More
closely a relative of the elephant than any other sea mammal,
Dugongs are slow-moving herbivores that feed on the sea grass.
Their weight ranges from about 230 Kg. to over 400 Kg.
The
locals are doing their best to keep the sea grass beds fertile.
They don't set their nets in the area. The largest herd in
all of Southeast Asia is right here on Ko Libong. Researchers
have identified 122 individuals.
They
are not too difficult to see either. They come into shallow
water (1 - 5 meters) when the tide comes in. They retreat
to deeper water when not feeding.
Bungalow
options
You
can stay in either upscale bungalows
built for more upscale tourists or you can experience what
Ko Libong is all about by staying in the bungalows by the
fishing village. You can enjoy the laid-back quality
of island life and the friendliness of the locals. The restaurants
at these bungalows are excellent. Click here to read more
about the bungalow
of Ko Libong.
